Translation Mail from Diana

My Dear Family;
Wij zijn terug uit polen, en een grotere hel ken je niet voorstellen.
WE hebben een trip achter de rug van bijna 3000 km.
Ik ben te moe en de emoties zijn nog te erg.
Wat ik daar heb gezien is met geen woorden te beschrijven.
Al dat haar wat daar lag en de baby kleertjes, en dan van kinderen

van amper

een maand oud.
Ik weet dat ik dit mijn hele leven al wilde zien, maar dat het zo erg

was.

Dit is met geen pen te beschrijven, dat lees je niet in een boek en

ook niet

als je er een film over ziet. het was zo erg dat ik niet eens alles heb
kunnen zien ,ik ben er uit gelopen.
Zoveel mensen afgemaakt door, je weet wat ik bedoel.
Waarom hbben ze niet ingegrepen?? de Engelsen wisten hier van al in

*41 maar

zij niet alleen
ook de USA en de andere landen hier in Europa.
Ik zal hier wel nooit een antwoord op krijgen, maar ik neem hen die dit
wisten het kwalijk.
en dat is dan nog zacht uitgedrukt.
Ik ga de grens naar het oosten naar voorlopig maar niet meer over.
En zeg nu niet dat de jongere generatie er niets aan ken doen, nu ze zijn
geen haar beter.
Toen wij op de terug reis waren en vertelden waar wij waren geweest,

keken

ze ons met de nek aan. Dus er is niets verandert, ze blijven nog

steeds die

wie zij waren.
Maar ik begrijp ook niets van de polen die daar woonden dat zij niet in
opstand kwamen.
Ik ben dan ook helemaal ingeklapt in polen, ik kon het niet meer

volhouden.

Maar ik weet nu wel het waarom ik altijd werd uit gescholden vieze

zijn jullie vergeten te vergassen.
Als ik mij wat beter voel zal ik zelf nog een verslag geven van de betere
dingen.
Maar zou jij dit voor mij wilen vertalen.

We have travelled 3000 kilometres I am too tired and the emotions are
too fresh
One cannot describe in words what I have seen All the hair that was
lying there and the baby clothes sometimes from children not older than
a month. I know I wanted to see this all my life but I couldn't imagine
how terrible it is. You won't read that in a book nor can you see it in
a film . And I didn't even see everything. I just walked out.
Why didn't do anyone anything ? The English knew about it in '41 but
they not alone alos the USA and all the European countries
No one did anything Why not :-(

I will never get an answer but I am very mad at those who knew and that
is a nice way of putting it !
I am not going over the border into the east any more.
And don't say the younger generation is better They aren't
When we went back home and I told people during our travel where we had
been they just ignored us.
So nothing changed they are still who they are
But I cannot understand one bit of the Polish people who lived there Why
didn't they rise against this .
I collapsed totally in Poland I couldn't stand it any more.
But I can understand now that they called me filthy Jew they have
forgotten to gas you.

When I feel better I will write some of the better things in this group
Philip , Anna and all of you my family I love you and you together with
Albert make I can live my life until now

Hey, well done, Anna!
I warned you, Diana, that you wouldn't be going to like it...
I know a few very decent Polish artists and curators (one of
them Jewish which is somewhat remarkable as the Jewish community in
Poland is small these days and there is still a lot of antisemitism
as you observed).
Well, glad that you're home safe & sound.

A lot of Allied politicians didn't like the Jews either. Many people
also said that it wouldn't be a good idea to broadcast this, since it
would make it seem like the war was for the Jews. I disagree!

It would've been difficult for the Allies to do anything directly, but
they could have broadcast what was going on, and given arms and supplies
to the Jews. The Russians could have done something, but Stalin didn't
care.

None of that is any excuse. What we failed to do is a disgrace to our
own ideals and the human race.

I know the visit was difficult, Anna. I can hardly imagine. I had a
Jewish friend who was a survivor of Auschwitz, but she didn't like to
talk about it. I mostly heard from her husband, and at the eulogy at her
funeral.

I also heard that there's still a lot of anti-Semitism in Poland. I
think that Poland and Russia were more anti-Semitic than Germany was,
before the Nazis.
